The Riddle — Moreau, Oedipus and the Sphinx Tee
THE RIDDLE
Oedipus and the Sphinx · Old Heaven Art Tee
She has a question. He has very little room for error.
Claws against his body. Wings gathered behind her. Their eyes meet with the unnerving concentration of two strangers who have already become each other’s problem.
Gustave Moreau gives us the encounter before its resolution, when intelligence must hold its ground against appetite—and the distinction between danger and attraction becomes inconveniently difficult to maintain.
Wear it to dinner with someone who asks good questions. To the exhibition you have strong opinions about. Anywhere a little composure might be mistaken for knowing the answer.
INSPIRED BY
Gustave Moreau’s Oedipus and the Sphinx (1864), in The Metropolitan Museum of Art. In Greek myth, the Sphinx challenges travelers with a riddle and kills those who fail. Oedipus survives by answering correctly. Moreau holds the two in a close, unbroken gaze, giving the mortal contest an unsettling intimacy.
For admirers of difficult beauty.
And people who know attraction is not an assurance of safety.
