«Or superbite, e via col viso altero,
figliuoli d’Eva, e non chinate il volto
sì che veggiate il vostro mal sentero!»

— Dante Alighieri, Purgatorio, XII, 70–72

“Go on, then—be proud, keep your faces raised, children of Eve; never lower your gaze to see the wayward path you tread!”
— Our translation

A little humility before your second cup.

Dante and Virgil have reached the part of the journey where everyone is carrying rather too much. Stone, chiefly. Also the consequences of having thought themselves very important.

Around them, bodies bend beneath their burdens. The eye wanders through muscle, drapery, shadow, and the considerable effort of becoming a better person. There is plenty to contemplate while postponing your correspondence.

The warm-toned illustration appears on both sides, with a discreet vertical OLD HEAVEN signature between them.

For readers of difficult books. Admirers of the human figure. Anyone whose morning could use a modest reduction in self-importance.

Gustave Doré’s illustrations for Dante Alighieri’s Purgatorio. On the terrace of pride, souls carry heavy stones that force them to bow: the posture of humility becomes the means of learning it.
